Honey Dian Hong – Yunnan Red Tea

A classic Chinese red tea from Yunnan, named Dian Hong (滇红) after the ancient kingdom of Dian that once existed in the region. We call this version “Honey” due to its naturally sweet, honeyed undertones.

Despite being a relatively young variety (about 90 years old), Dian Hong was originally developed to compete with Indian and Ceylon teas in the global market. The strategy worked—Yunnan red teas are now renowned worldwide for their bold flavors and complex aromas.

What Makes This Dian Hong Special?

📍 Unique Tea Trees from Mengku
This Honey Dian Hong is made from a rare local cultivar in Mengku, Lincang. Unlike conventional plantation-grown red teas, it comes from large-leaf tea trees (a subspecies of Camellia sinensis var. assamica). These trees have a stronger root system, allowing them to absorb more minerals and nutrients, leading to a richer and more complex tea profile.
